The Boys' Brigade is the oldest of the youth organisations having started in Glasgow, Scotland in 1883. Our Company, the 72nd Birmingham, has been in existance since 1946 and is located at Shirley Baptist Church; there are other groups locally, nationally and worldwide. All of our officers and helpers are CRB checked. We have an "access for all policy" and by our very nature, we dovetail into the Government "every child matters" programme. Additionally, all of our Officers and helpers are registered with the Church and follow the "Safe to Grow" Policy for Church Youth Work.
Although we are a Christian organisation and belong to the Church, we do not put any pressure on the children to attend Church. The whole idea of the organisation is for boys to get to know other people of a similar age from other schools and backgrounds, etc., to make new friends and to experience things that they may not normally have the chance to do.
A typical meeting for each of the boys age groups is made up of games, badge work and social time, The badge work at all ages encompasses many things, including suitable life skills and community awareness. The social time includes such things as trips out, camping weekends, annual camp, and so on. We try hard to make the evenings fun and interesting; we do realise that the children have been working hard at school all day, so we don't work them too hard!
Also, at the age of 14, our young men have the chance to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme which is well recognised and stands them in good stead with job interviews.
The organisation has a uniform, which we do like to be worn - it is not expensive and can be purchased through ourselves.
